NOTS at Resident Feminist Fridays

We made it out to Feminist Friday at the Resident to see NOTS (Memphis), Batwings Catwings (LA), and French Vanilla (LA). Every week, the DTLA venue hosts Feminist Friday, which is pretty much what it sounds like, female-fronted bands playing on a Friday. We walked into DJ Emily Twombly (Origami Records/LA record queen) spinning that dope vinyl.

I was stoked to see NOTS. We had been looking forward to seeing them earlier this year at the cancelled Levitation Fest. The 4-piece, noise punk band just released a new album in September called “Cosmetic”. They killed it! Most notable was the erratic synth sounds by Alexandra Eastburn + wild vocals/guitar that came out of Natalie Hoffman (former bass player in Ex-Cult).

French Vanilla was another band we were looking forward to. Funky bass lines and saxophone, combined with Sally Spitz’ sharp vocals create a no wave, dance-punk sound. Reminded me of The Slits and X-Ray Spex, which I wasn’t mad about at all. They brought it with their energy and fun attitude.

Definitely a night of post-punk vibes, filled with screaming female vocals, heavy synths and funky bass lines. Looking forward to seeing these bands around town. Catch Feminist Friday tonight and every Friday at the Resident!
